Premier League: Why Chelsea Are Title Contenders

Few Chelsea fans would not have thought that their team would be challenging Liverpool and others at the top of the Premier League table after they were beaten by the Reds on matchday two. The Blues were short of ideas during that game as Liverpool showed them why they won the Premier League title at a canter last season.

Chelsea lost 2-0 to Liverpool at home during that game and also finished the game with ten men after Danish international Andreas Christensen was sent off for a professional foul on Reds attacker Sadio Mane. It must be pointed out that the red card played a big part in the outcome of the game just like Senegalese international Mane who was involved in the red card incident and also went on to score the two Liverpool goals in the second half.

The Blues started the season with a lot of optimism after they splashed the cash on several quality players. Spending money definitely attracts high expectations in the footballing world, and Chelsea was no exception. Those expectations were punctured by that Liverpool defeat as the new signings like Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and others failed to perform. They could be forgiven since they are just finding their feet in a new league.

Since that Liverpool defeat, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard and his players have been able to put together an impressive unbeaten that has propelled them to the top three on the table. After the first ten games in the Premier League, the Blues are two points off Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool after a run of eight league games without defeat. Let’s examine why Chelsea are confirmed title contenders;

1. Potent Attack – The Blues have the most potent attack in the league with 22 goals in ten games. They have the same number of goals as Liverpool. Chelsea brought in a lot of quality players in the summer and they have started to deliver the goals especially the attackers. The Blues signed attackers like Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz. German international Timo Werner is the topscorer for the Blues with eight goals in all competitions. Four of those goals have come in the league.

2. Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva – The form and fitness of new signings Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy is key to the title challenge of Chelsea this season. With the two players in the Blues defence, they have conceded just one goal.

Chelsea player that is “a killer” revealed

Romelu Lukaku

Former prolific midfielder, Joe Cole, has revealed that in Romelu Lukaku, The blues now have a “killer” in their squad who will score more goal.

Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal as Chelsea began their Champions League campaign with a slim 1-0 victory over Zenit St Petersburg on Tuesday.

That was Romelu Lukaku fourth goal in four matches since returning to Stamford Bridge in a £98million deal from Inter Milan this summer.

Joe Cole has accepted the fact that Romelu Lukaku was not at his best against Zenit, but said his powerful nature makes him the perfect man to lead the team under Thomas Tuchel.

“I’m going to throw this out there, I think he’ll be top scorer in the Champions League this season.

“Lukaku didn’t even have one of his better games, he was a little bit scruffy but he’s a finisher now, a killer. Once that ball was delivered there was only going to be one winner, he’s a great finisher,” Cole said on BT Sport.

Legend ignores Man Utd, names six teams that can win champions league

Danny Murphy

Experienced legend, Danny Murphy has listed the six clubs he thinks can win the Champions League this season.

His list include title holders Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool. However, Manchester United was not mentioned.

Danny Murphy predicts English clubs could be a dominant force in Europe this campaign, with Chelsea hoping to defend the title they won after beating Manchester City in last season’s champions league final.

For Liverpool, they reached successive Champions League finals in 2018 and 2019 and would be eager to challenge for another this seasonn.

Danny Murphy insists Manchester City are one of the favorites as with Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, PSG and Atletico Madrid.

Asked which teams he expects to challenge for the Champions League title, Murphy told MailSport:

“I personally think the winners will come from one of six – Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and PSG.

“Atletico are an outsider because Diego Simeone has matchwinners in Luis Suarez and Griezmann in addition to the remarkable team spirit he’s fostered.”

Tammy Abraham ‘fits the bill’ as an Arsenal signing, says Winterburn

With Arsenal interested in the signature of Chelsea striker, Tammy Abraham, they have been told by their hero, Nigel Winterburn that the England international fits the profile of a potential signing for the club.

Tammy Abraham looks set to leave Chelsea this summer as the Blues continue their pursuit of Erling Haaland. He is also out of favour at the club with lack of playing time. He earned 22 Premier League appearances last term, scoring six goals which is not enough for him.

Reacting to the news, Winterburn said (via Goal): “He certainly would fit the bill of recent Arsenal signings, young with a point to prove.

“People will question his consistency but what you want is for these young players to get a run in the team.

“Is he going to get a run in a team if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is playing well? Probably not unless Aubameyang can be switched to the left-hand side – although you then need to leave out either Nicolas Pepe or Bukayo Saka.

“With Abraham, there’s potential there and development for a young, young player. So, I think it’s an option [for] Arsenal, although with Alexandre Lacazette being linked with a move away, it could be just a name that has been thrown into a hat.”

He will replace French striker, Alexandre Lacazette who is also opened to leaving the Emirates Stadium for £15 million after scoring 17 goals in all competitions last season.

When asked about Lacazette, Winterburn continued: “Arsenal shouldn’t sell Lacazette unless they’ve got an upgrade in place. I wouldn’t let him go until we have secured another striker. I’ve said that all along.

“Lacazette is a different striker to anything Arsenal have at the club. When he’s in top form, he holds the ball up well, his link-up play is good.

“I suppose his strike rate is not the very, very best of what you want, but then we are not at the very, very top of the league either at the moment as well.

“So personally, at the moment, I don’t want to see him go, unless we’ve got someone coming in that’s going to excite me.

“I wouldn’t let him go and then we haven’t got anybody else to bring in. For me, that’s just way too risky.”

He’s been linked with a surprise move across London. Reports have suggested Arsenal are monitoring his situation and could make an offer if Chelsea decide to leave him leave.
