“I just don’t see him leaving Man City for Arsenal. He scored four goals last week, he’s not going to leave.

“I think this is a stupid and silly rumour. He’s not going to leave Man City, he just won’t.

“He’s been playing a lot recently so for me there’s zero chance of him going to Arsenal.

“It’s not because Arsenal are not worth it but I just feel that he’s still part of the process there. If he wasn’t getting the game time then yes but he’s starting games now.

“Maybe one or two players who have been there and done it. I think that is what has let them down in these last few weeks.

“There were no calm heads on the pitch against Tottenham or Newcastle, they lost their cool completely which was disappointing and a huge development.

“In those moments you need a calm head to settle everything down and I don’t think Arsenal have that.

“If they are going to go one better next season and get into the top-four, that is exactly what I would do.

Paul Merson has named another former captain Patrick Vieira as the man to replace Mikel Arteta if he is sacked as Arsenal manager.

There have been outrage over Arsenal’s inability to secure a Champions League spot as a result of the defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

While there are no reports of the Gunners board attempting to sack the manager, some pundits have continued to debate the future of the Spanish boss at the Emirates Stadium.

Vieira has impressed this season with Crystal Palace. His efforts are being noticed especially after a report earlier in the season claimed he is also being monitored by Man City to replace Pep Guardiola.

On his part, Mikel Arteta has done well to have returned the team back to European football especially with wins against Man United and Chelsea with a very youthful team.

However, Merson thinks the Spaniard could be on borrowed time if things go wrong and Vieira continues to impress at Palace.

“Could he be the next Arsenal manager? It all depends on timing, for me. When Sir Alex Ferguson was about to retire in the early 2000s, a handful of names were reportedly in the running to replace him but none of those links came to fruition,” Merson told SportsKeeda.”

“Arsenal have given Mikel Arteta a new contract but if he starts the 2022-23 Premier League season with a series of underwhelming results and Vieira does so with a string of wins, he could well be the next Gunners boss!”
