Arsenal hero Martin Keown reacts to Mat Ryan signing with Emi Martinez claim

Published

on

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has reacted to the signature of Mat Ryan from Brighton and Hove Albion on a loan deal by stating that the club should have done all they could to keep goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Mat Ryan was made to join Arsenal on loan after Runar Alex Runarsson’s initial failure to fill the void left by Emi Martinez’s departure to Aston Villa in the summer.

Runarsson got his chance but made a number of high-profile mistakes, with his most notable error coming during the second half of December’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta is not convinced that Runarsson can serve as a cover to goalkeeper Bernd Leno and made it clear he was going to bring in another goalkeeper with the likes of on-loan Swansea City star Freddie Woodman and Barcelona’s Neto linked.

Keown claimed that the decision to bring in Ryan was a good move, but Martinez should not have been sold after an impressive campaign last season.

“Runarsson didn’t really catch the eye or the performance that we would have expected,” Keown told talkSPORT. “If you remember in the League Cup [against City] there were a few mistakes [but he’s a] very young man, of course, who has got a big career ahead of him.

“I was disappointed to see Martinez leave in the first place when you consider he climbed a mountain last year to get into the team. But I imagine they couldn’t afford to keep two, what I would call, first-string goalkeepers.

“Financially, maybe, they didn’t see that was the right way forward and he was allowed to leave

“This is a good adjustment, Mat Ryan coming in. 59 caps for Australia and he’s their number one goalkeeper. He’s been out of the team at Brighton.

“He’s coming with good experience and that’s what Arsenal need in the event that Leno gets injured at any point.”

Meanwhile, the former Valencia stopper said he would bring the fight to Leno for the club’s number one spot. “I’ve never been a goalkeeper where I’ve liked to sit on the bench,” Ryan told Arsenal’s YouTube channel.

“I’m sure every goalkeeper says that, but I’ve come here under the circumstance. Bernd has obviously done a great job for the club in his time since he’s arrived and he’s a top quality goalkeeper. But I believe also I’ve shown that in my career, and I’m looking to come here and push him and he pushes me and try to get the best out of one another and to improve as individuals.

“If we can do that, then who’s going to be getting the nod on matchday, with the number of games that we have in all the competitions that we’re still alive in, is going to be who’s in the best form and that’s only going to help the team perform better and get results.”

Rangnick might be leaving the door open for Arsenal to land United star with latest development at Old Trafford

Published

on

Latest development at Old Trafford hints that Arsenal could simply land Anthony Martial with less challenge if not well managed by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Just recently, Rangnick accused the Frenchman, who is keen to leave the club because of lack of game time, of refusing to be in the squad to play.

Rangnick said “He [Anthony Martial] didn’t want to be in the squad.

“He would have been in the squad normally but he didn’t want to and that was the reason why he didn’t travel with us yesterday.”

In his reaction, Martial hit back at those claims, saying: “I will never refuse to play a match for Manchester United.

“I’ve been here for 7 years and I never disrespected and will never disrespect the club and the fans.”

While the wide-man’s stance seems clear for his future, situations like this could prompt his move whether that ends up being at the Emirates or not.

Arsenal are keen on a forward as they are not sure of the future of Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may not play for the club again.

Also the fact that Nicolas Pepe has not been at his best with lack of consistent performance makes a move for Martial valid.

Arsenal told existing midfielder not strong enough, reason why this signing must happen

Published

Former Arsenal man, Kevin Campbell has told the North London outfit that they need to sign Yves Bissouma because Albert Sambi Lokonga is not strong enough for the Premier League yet.

Bissouma has been on the Gunners’ radar for a long time now as the Malian continues to impress at Brighton.

Some reports have claimed he could join a top club soon enough and Arsenal could be the ideal next step for him.

Mikel Arteta is particular about a midfielder, having hinted that he is short in that position but who he will be bringing in remains unknown.

Campbell said the Brighton midfielder is best and would end up as a good buy for the Gunners.

He told Football Insider: “I think Arsenal need two midfielders though, if I am honest with you.

“Lokonga is a good young player but he is not strong enough to be a mainstay in that midfield yet. We need some experience in there.

“Bissouma is young and has experience. I think they need another one as well though. Bissouma would make us so much stronger for the second half of the season.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal are keen on the signature of Authur Melo with reports that a bid has been submitted already for his signature.

Verdit passed over English defender at Arsenal

Published

Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has claimed he is unsure Calum Chambers is a player for the future at Arsenal.

While hailing the player for proving critics wrong with his recent performance with the opportunity handed to him, the former striker said he can relied upon by manager Mikel Arteta but doesn’t think he has a future at the Emirates Stadium.

Phillips also praised the England international for silencing his doubters with Thursday’s showing.

“Credit to Chambers, because it hasn’t been an easy ride for him at Arsenal,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He’s come in for a bit of criticism over the years, but all you can do when you get on that pitch is try and ram those comments back down people’s throats. He’s done exactly that at Anfield.

“Arteta is trying to create something at Arsenal with the spirit after stripping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of the captaincy. He really means business, and he wants his players to reflect that as well.

“Chambers really rose to the challenge against Liverpool, he was brilliant. Is he the future of Arsenal? I’m not so sure, but he’s a player Arteta can rely on.”

Chambers has started just two league games for Arsenal this season among five appearances in all competitions.

Arsenal urged beat Villa to Bissouma after £40m update

Kevin Campbell has urged Arsenal to beat Aston Villa in their race for the signature of Brighton’s Yves Bissouma this January winter transfer window.

The North London outfit want a midfielder, especially as Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny are away on national assignments for the African Nations Cup.

Mikel Arteta admitted that he is short in the midfield and wants to have at least, an addition.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said the 25-year-old would make Mikel Arteta’s side “so much stronger” as Aston Villa are reportedly willing to sign him for £40 million.

Campbell wants the London club to meet Brighton’s valuation for the player this month.

“Don’t mess around Arsenal,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“This is a move that has been spoken about for 18 months and I think we will do it. Just do the deal. Go and get him in. Pay the £40million.

“I think Arsenal need two midfielders though, if I am honest with you.

“Lokonga is a good young player but he is not strong enough to be a mainstay in that midfield yet. We need some experience in there.

Martin Keown urges Arsenal to sign “awesome” winger capable of replacing Pepe

Published

Arsenal legend Martin Keown has urged manager Mikel Arteta and Edu to sign “awesome” Wolves winger Adama Traore.

He has been linked with arch-rivals Tottenham as he is out of contract at Molineux in 2023.

Spurs are keen on signing Traore on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to buy, according to the Telegraph.

For Arsenal, he is tipped to perfectly replace Nicolas Pepe who has been struggling to maintain a consistent performance for the club since his big money move.

According to Keown, the winger is perfect for the Gunners, knowing he already has an idea of the English Premier League.

Wolves reportedly want around £20million for the winger, a drop from the £50m that was requested last summer.

There are suggestions that the player will not renew his contract at the Premier League club, meaning they could cash in on him this month.

And former Arsenal defender Keown has urged Mikel Arteta to strike a deal for Traore.

“I feel Traore is awesome at times and just for once, we have the satisfaction of seeing it,” Keown told BBC Final Score.

“It’s a lovely finish from him. I’d sign him if I was a manager. Arsenal – get in and buy him.”

Arsenal told this signing will take the club to the next level

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has told Arsenal that the signing of Dusan Vlahovic will take the club to “the next level”.

Arsenal seek to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the Fiorentina striker has been named as a good fit.

The former Leeds United stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is positive that the striker will be able to replicate his incredible goalscoring form in the Premier League.

“He’s only 21, and for club and country, he has one in two, I mean, wow,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It would be one hell of a statement. It would be a massive statement for them.

“Arsenal have really picked up this season and putting a striker like that in the team might take them to that next level.

“I think they have been looking a bit toothless in front of goal at times.

“They are missing that top-quality striker that the other big six teams have.

“If they get this guy, and I think they can, it would be a massive, massive signing for them.

“He looks deadly and if he’s scoring that many goals in Italy there is a good chance he can do it in England as well.”

Manchester United and Arsenal have been handed a major transfer boost in their pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria as the club’s sporting director Max Eberl made it clear that he can leave.

Both Arsenal and United have been linked with the midfielder as they are both in need of an addition.

Eberl has admitted that Zakaria is free to depart this month, leaving the suitors with the opportunity of submitting a bid.

“There’s nothing on my desk,” the Gladbach sporting director told Kicker.

“It’s not surprising that there is speculation about both of them and especially Denis, but it’s no longer our topic.

“They both still have a half year of contract. But we have also said again and again that if something comes up that we have to deal with for financial reasons.

“I cannot rule out that both will leave the club in winter – or one. There will be changes in the summer. We’ve worked with one squad for almost three years now.”

Interestingly, Zakaria was left out of the Gladbach squad that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta made it clear that his team is short in the midfield and he is keen to add more depth to his squad.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka has revealed he should have been playing for either Tottenham or Chelsea because he had trials at the two clubs a youngster.

He was only able to become a Gunner because Arsenal were ‘always in his heart’, with the presence of Arsene Wenger having a big say on his decision.

Asked how close he came to being a Tottenham player, Saka laughed and told Sky Sports: ‘I remember one session, and I don’t think I went to another one.

‘But, yeah, I think it was just to go and try different clubs but we always had Arsenal in our hearts.’

Asked who else tried to sign him as a youngster, Saka continued: ‘There was Arsenal, Chelsea I was at for a bit, there was Watford, there was Tottenham.

‘I think there was maybe two more but those are the ones that I can remember from the top of my head.

‘Arsenal was the one I always wanted to go to. It seemed like they had a lot of faith in their youth and there was a clear pathway.

‘You could see the players coming up from Hale End to London Colney, and my dad also really believed in the project and he loved Arsene Wenger a lot.
